Guest faculty artists Ian Davidson (oboe), Kung-Ae Lee & Jason Kwak (piano), and John Schmidt (organ), join with Texas State Chorale for a concert celebrating texts about “Life and Death”. Works include Cantata #106 Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit (Actus Tragicus) ~ J. S. Bach, “Tom O’Bedlam” ~ Jacob Avshalomov, and selections from the Liebeslieder Waltzes ~ Johannes Brahms.

18Twentieth Century Choral Masterpieces

Using Arvo Pärt’s mystical Berliner Messe as a framework, University Singers will explore music from some of the greatest twentieth century choral masters. Composers include John Tavener, Benjamin Britten, Gerald Finzi, Charles Villiers Stanford and Igor Stravinsky.

Texas State Women’s Choir will have an opportunity to share their collective musicianship with a performance of music for treble voices. Ladies from all across the campus join music majors in songs from a variety of cultures and genres.

Texas State Men’s Choir ~ November 20, 2011 ~ 7:30 ~ LBJ Student Center Ballroom
The Republic of Georgia holds a rich folk music tradition stretching back over 2,000 years. The Texas State Men’s Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Babcock, brings this tradition to life with a multi-media presentation collected during Dr. Babcock’s 2010 field study. The choir will be joined by Trio Kavkasia, which consists of three North Americans who together have more than sixty years of experience singing the traditional music of the Republic of Georgia. They have sung together as a professional trio dedicated to studying and performing that music since 1994. In the years since they have performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caucasus region including Lincoln Center and the Tbilisi Opera House. They have recorded several commercially released albums on the Traditional Crossroads, Naxos World and Well-tempered World labels.

Texas State Chorale and University Singers unite for a concert of ‘cori spezzati’ (separated choir) repertoire featuring choral works for double choir by master composers. Works will include the choral symphony Vier Gesange of Robert Schumann and pieces by Mendelssohn, Britten, and Massenet.

Join Texas State’s versatile a cappella group VocaLibre, under the direction of Craig Aamot, for a night of exciting vocal music spanning styles from classically choral to pop and rock. The singers will offer up traditional favorites from Monteverdi to Whitacre, and contemporary covers of artists including Gotye, Adelle, Jason Mraz and Katy Tunstall.
